05 / CYBERSECURITY
Cybersecurity Home Lab
An isolated space to investigate systems, understand vulnerabilities, and learn security by doing.
The objective
Create a practical environment for authorized security testing and CTF practice. Virtual machines and network isolation keep exercises separated from everyday systems and provide a controlled setting for investigating vulnerabilities.
My contribution
- Built a personal learning environment using VirtualBox, Kali Linux, and Metasploitable 2.
- Used Nmap and Linux command-line tools to explore systems within the lab.
- Practised vulnerability analysis and CTF exercises in an isolated, authorized setting.
Technical challenges & approach
Keeping practice within a controlled environment
Deliberately vulnerable systems need a clear boundary from everyday devices. I used VirtualBox with an isolated lab network, Kali Linux as a working environment, and Metasploitable 2 as a training target. Exercises stay within the lab's authorized scope.
Interpreting discovery results
I used Nmap and Linux command-line tools to explore the lab's systems and services. An open port indicates a reachable service, not proof of an exploitable vulnerability. The learning task is to interpret discovery results in the context of the target's configuration.
Learning focus
The learning focus is understanding network services, interpreting discovery results, and relating vulnerabilities to how systems are configured. Scope and isolation are part of the exercise.
Project scope
Educational use on authorized lab targets only. The illustration is conceptual; private addresses, credentials, exploit payloads, and sensitive configuration are omitted.
